Returning to the foundations is the real work
What my knee taught me about healing
As a dancer in my youth, I always had incredible joint flexibility. I was the person who could drop into a split without thinking twice. As I got older, I tried to keep that mobility and flexibility as a priority—because it was familiar, it was me.
But the more I learned about women’s health, the more I realized I needed to shift my focus. I needed to expand my movement practice to include heavy weights because I learned how valuable strength training is for blood sugar balance, bone density, hormone health, and overall longevity.
For years, I was in a rhythm—lifting weights three times a week and mixing in yoga, Pilates, and barre four times a week. But a few years ago, my right knee started to hurt. The pain would come and go depending on my activity. I’d stretch, rest, and eventually it would settle—until one day it didn’t. So I sought help.
A local holistic PT mentioned the possibility of a meniscus tear.
I was a mess. I was distraught. Here I was doing everything “right,” and yet my body felt like it was breaking down.
I didn’t know what to do next. I kept up with PT exercises, did Reiki to support my healing, and anxiously waited for an MRI appointment. Two months later, I finally got in. Thankfully, everything was structurally okay—but there was internal tension causing the pain.
I knew I had taken myself as far as I could. I needed help. I needed someone to guide me back into my body in a deeper way.
So I hired a personal trainer.
In our very first session, he saw the issue immediately: I was too flexible and had been relying on my knee joint to move instead of my feet and hips.
“Oh, easy fix,” I thought.
BOY, was I wrong.
He took me all the way back to the foundation of movement. Reconnecting to the ground. Relearning what stability actually feels like. I’ve now been working with him for over 10 weeks and haven’t touched anything heavier than 10 pounds.
At first, I was frustrated. I felt like I had gone all the way back to square one—doing bodyweight movements after years of structured training. I felt disappointed that, for all the connection I thought I had with my body, I missed something so fundamental. I even felt embarrassed, like I “should have known better.”
But then I paused and questioned those thoughts:
What made me believe starting over was a failure?
Why did I care about how it looked from the outside?
Who decided going back to basics was “bad”?
And isn’t part of being a coach modeling that raising your hand and saying I need help is actually a strength?
Why was I so fixated on the conclusion rather than the journey?
Slowly, I softened.
Slowly, I reminded myself that foundations are everything.
Reexploring our beliefs.
Reframing setbacks.
Reconnecting to ourselves.
Growing from within.
