The 70% Problem

Why surface-level health will only get you so far

As we grow up, we are told what to do. We are given rules and regulations to follow to help us achieve the life we desire.

And we are used to this method. You are the expert, tell me what to do, I will do it, and I will expect a certain outcome.

So when people hear about the work I do, most expect the same thing, at least initially. That, with all my experience, I will hand them a set of rules to follow, and they will get results.

Here is my hot take.

If you are only focusing on the surface of health, you will only get about 70% of the way toward your goals.

That is why I have six pillars of health.

I know that how we sleep, how we eat, and how we move our bodies directly impacts our health. And yes, I know the science and the literature. I can give you guidelines and best practices based on your particular health goals.

But here is the thing.

That is just the surface.

True sustainability lives in the deep dive.

I learned this firsthand, not just through my clients, but through my own journey. There was a time when I was doing everything right on paper. I knew the science. I knew the guidelines. And something still was not shifting. It was not until I went deeper, into the belief underneath the behavior, into the why behind the habit, that everything changed. That is when I realized the surface was never the whole story.

I see this with my clients too.

I worked with a woman recently who came to me for stubborn weight. We started with nutrition, sleep, and movement. But then we got into her motivation. What was driving her? What did she actually want and why?

But as we went deeper, something shifted.

We moved into her beliefs. The stories she had been carrying quietly for years. And that is where the real work began.

Because underneath the goals, underneath the habits, underneath all of it, was a belief she had never said out loud before.

That she was not enough.

Not enough to deserve the time. Not enough to prioritize herself. Not enough to believe that lasting change was actually possible for her.

And when we got there, when she finally saw it clearly and began to question it, everything opened up.

She did not just find new motivation. She found something deeper. She learned that she was enough. Exactly as she was. Right now. Not after the goal. Not after the change. Now.

That is the shift that changes everything.

It is not about the surface. It is about what is underneath it.

It is about defining our motivation. Understanding the why behind the way we want to do something. Are we doing it because we fear something? Because we do not want to feel guilt or shame? Or because we know it will bring us genuine joy?

What does achieving this goal actually give us? What do we gain, and what are we letting go of?

This is where the six pillars come in.

My six pillars of health are:

  • Movement

  • Sleep

  • Nutrition

  • Belief systems

  • Mindset

  • Self-empowerment

The first three, nutrition, movement, and sleep, address the surface. The next three, belief systems, mindset, and self-empowerment, address the root. You need both. Because without the surface work, the body does not have the foundation it needs. And without the root work, the surface changes will never fully stick.

Could you do this work alone? Possibly.

But what I find is that when we try to get to the root on our own, we often stop ourselves. We do not challenge ourselves to really pause and speak from our soul. And there is a reason for that.

Our body is filtering about 95% of the information we receive at any given moment, all in an effort to protect us. And when we filter everything through our own processing system, we create our truth based on our current belief system.

Which means the very beliefs that are keeping us stuck are also the ones doing the filtering.

That is why this work is best done with support. Not because you are not capable. But because having someone reflect back what you cannot yet see changes everything.

If you are ready to stop working on the surface and start going deeper, I would love to support you. Book a free 30-minute discovery call or send me a message, and let's talk about what that could look like for you.

Because 70% is not enough. You deserve all of it.
