The Inconvenience is Often the Invitation
When the Universe tells you to slow down
One of my core beliefs is that things do not happen by accident. There is always a reason behind them.
A few months ago, I was grocery shopping for my sister, trying to fit it in on the way home instead of calling to ask her first. I just went ahead because I needed to get back quickly. While shopping, I dropped a whole container of eggs on the floor. I let out a sigh, cleaned it up, and though part of me thought about leaving it, I went back to get another carton. Once I got home, I opened the fridge and found two containers of eggs already there.
Some might call that a weird coincidence. I call it the universe trying to signal me to slow down, and maybe to ask first instead of assuming.
A few weeks later, I had a strange week at the gym. Every single day, I forgot something small. One day it was one headphone. Another day, it was both. Then I brought just the case. Then I forgot my shoes. And finally, my water bottle. I was getting frustrated with myself and kept trying to hack my way out of it. Maybe a list on my phone. Waking up earlier. Packing everything the night before.
And then on the last day, I finally paused, and it hit me that I was not forgetful. I was rushing.
This week, Brooklyn got hot. Extremely hot. But being a creature of the sun, I was not totally hating it. One evening, while my in-laws were visiting, I suggested we sit in our pergola since it had finally cooled down a little. Within moments, the sky opened up, and it started to pour. Not just rain- a flash flood kind of pour.
And yet the coolest thing was that we were completely dry under the pergola.
I reached for my phone to check how long the storm would last and realized I did not have it with me. Neither did anyone else. I had a brief moment of oh no, followed quickly by the realization that we were just going to have to sit there.
My father-in-law said he was ready to go in. I looked at the rain and said, “I think we might be here for a while. But look, we are not getting wet. Is it not kind of cool?” He smiled. And then I asked him, “Did you ever play in the rain as a kid?” He said yes. And then he told me a story. A vivid, detailed memory from his childhood that I had never heard before. One I would never have known if the sky had not made the decision for us.
And perhaps that is the whole point.
Not the rain. Not the eggs. Not the forgotten headphones.
But what happens when we stop trying to get ahead of the moment and just sit inside it?
The universe did not ruin our evening. It gave us something better than what we had planned.
I think about this a lot in my work and in my own life. How often are we so focused on getting to the next thing that we miss what is right in front of us? How often is the inconvenience actually the invitation?
The dropped eggs were not a mistake. The forgotten headphones were not a flaw. The flash flood was not a bad time. They were all nudges. Little moments asking me to slow down, look up, and pay attention. And the more I practice noticing them, the more I realize they were never coincidences at all.
They were always trying to tell me something.
The question is - are you listening?
This week, I want you to try something. The next time something small goes wrong, a delay, a forgotten item, an unexpected change of plan, pause before you fix it or rush past it. And ask yourself: what might this moment be trying to give me? You might be surprised by what you find.
And if you are ready to start practicing this kind of awareness with a community of women who get it, I would love to have you inside the F the Hustle Collective. It is a space where we slow down together. Where we notice the nudges. Where we learn to stop rushing past the moments that are actually trying to give us something.
Because you were never meant to do this work alone.
