Wellness isn’t a solo sport.
Your village is important.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about community and its relationship to health.
In the wellness space, we talk a lot about nutrition, movement, supplements, and mindset, but we sometimes forget one of the most significant aspects of health — community.
What if community were a priority in a wellness plan?
When we feel truly connected — seen, supported, and safe — our body shifts into healing mode. Oxytocin rises, cortisol drops, and our nervous system relaxes.
Chronic isolation has been linked to higher rates of heart disease, depression, anxiety, and even early mortality. Loneliness, some studies say, can be as harmful as smoking about fifteen cigarettes a day. Because as humans, we are wired for belonging. It is a primal instinct.
Think about the last time you were with your community. Have you ever felt the weight lift when you are around people that you love? It’s like you can finally exhale — you can finally relax and sink into the calmness. It’s because we are reminded that we’re human. After all, it’s okay not to have it all figured out and to remember that we’re part of something larger than ourselves.
So what can community look like?
Community can take on many forms. It can be family, close friends, your gym group, your book club, or even the people you meet through a shared passion or practice. The form doesn’t matter as much as the feeling it evokes: being seen, heard, and valued for who you are. Your community can be robust or small, and that doesn’t even matter. It’s about having people who want to know the little things in life, who ask how you’re really doing, who celebrate your small wins, and who stand beside you when life feels heavy.
The truth is, we can’t do it alone. We need support, presence, laughter, perspective, and love. We need a village. It’s the people who want to move through life with us.
So what does your community look like?
Do you have people in your inner circle who are there for you in both big and small moments? People you aren’t afraid to raise your hand around and say, “Hey, I need help”?
But often, the thing that holds us back from finding or creating community is fear. It’s the fear of not belonging, of being rejected, of feeling like we don’t fit.
What if we could shift that emotion? What if we could move from fear to opportunity?
Instead of seeing connection as a risk, what if we saw it as an opportunity — an opportunity to build, grow, and cultivate something new? To expand our world just a little bit more each day?
The next time you’re sitting in a coffee shop and notice someone who feels inviting — maybe they’re reading a book you love or have an open energy — what would happen if you leaned in? Said hello? Smiled? You never know where that moment could lead.
Opportunities to build community are all around us. We just need to take the leap.
