What TV Show Are You Broadcasting?

How our filters can change our reality.

Have you ever walked into a conversation already bracing for it to go wrong, only to watch it go exactly that way? Or started a Monday with every intention of eating well and moving your body, and by noon, your plans got derailed?

This week, inside the F the Hustle Collective’s monthly Zoom, we talked about broadcasting. Broadcasting emotions in NLP refers to unconsciously radiating your internal feelings into your environment. What you carry into a situation shapes what you find there. And for so many of the women I work with, that state is chronic stress that has been running so long it just feels like personality. I often hear "that's just how I am."

So let’s talk about it.

Our brain is a computer. It filters about 95% of it based on what we program it to look for. Our program is what we are focused on and what we tell it to look for. This is why we can still hear our name in a large crowd: we have subconsciously taught our brains to filter for this word. It’s meaningful for us.

The same thing happens with our health. When we move through life feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, ashamed, or guilty, our brain sets its filter to look for more of the same. We start scanning for the thing that confirms what we already feel. And when we find it, the emotion grows, which then drives behavior. You skipped the workout because you were already too tired, or there were too many demands from the people around you. You had the 10 pm snack because you wanted a quick hit of happiness or joy, only to be left with shame and guilt. You avoid the doctor's appointment because hearing that you need to make changes is too overwhelming right now. These behaviors are not random. They are your nervous system, broadcasting, and your behavior following.

Your internal state does two things at once. It tells your brain what to look for. And it sets what you send out to others. Both are working at the same time, which is why the feeling compounds so quickly. You are filtering for the negative and radiating it outward, and the people and situations around you are responding to that signal, which gives you more evidence that your feelings are true. The loop feeds itself.

But it is not just who you are. It is what your nervous system has been trained to look for.

The way I teach clients is to think about what they do want because the brain doesn’t understand “don’t” and “can’t”; it will replace those words with “can” and “do”. So, instead of looking at what they want to avoid. We look at: what do you want to happen, how do you want to feel, and how do you want to behave?

Then we run an ecological check, which is a simple set of questions. If I have this, is there any downside? Will anyone be harmed? Can I accept this outcome fully? If it passes, it is yours to claim

Then we make one shift. Instead of "I want to move my body for an hour a day," we move to "I am moving my body for an hour a day." Present tense. It signals our brain that it has already happened. And then we do the deeper work of embedding that new filter. This is changing their broadcast and their energy. They have trained their brains not just to hear it but also to look for evidence of it.

When you go into a situation with that kind of preparation, you are not ignoring reality. You are choosing your lens before reality chooses it for you. Your filter shifts. Your energy shifts. And what you find in that room shifts with it.

This is the backbone of our health. Stress is the hidden deterrent that most wellness plans never address. If we only absorb the chaos, if we only filter for the negative, we will keep finding reasons to deprive ourselves of rest, of nourishment, of the things that actually heal us.

The body follows the mind's lead.

Change the filter, and you change what the body has to respond to.

This is the work I do with clients. We go past the surface level of health and get deep where the real change happens.
