Your Future Self Will Thank You

The secerts to longevity

As a health and wellness coach, I often ask clients, “What is your motivation here?” “Why do you want to make this change?” Many tell me they want to be active with their kids and grandchildren, and some say they want to continue traveling in their later years. When I hear this type of motivation, it usually signals that the client is ready for real change because they have a positive motivation behind their desire.

However, because I believe in changing belief systems, I ask, “What happens if you don’t make this change?”. At this point, clients usually have to pause and think about this question because it allows them to play their lives out with no changes, and usually, it’s not what they desire or picture. It sheds light on the necessity of taking action now. At this point, I ask one final question before creating an action plan, “do you give yourself permission to make changes now so you can have the future you desire?”. This is an essential question in my work because allowing ourselves to make a change starts the rewiring of our brain's belief system and automatic responses. These are the first steps to the realization that today, we make choices for our future selves.

The secret to longevity isn’t some diet or huge life change, or a quick fix; it is deciding what you want to feel like in the future and what you want to be able to accomplish. A clear picture can help orient you towards taking small steps toward achieving your future state. Everything we do today sets up for how we feel tomorrow or the week after. For example, I know that if I can move my body in the morning, I will have energy in the afternoon, and my digestive system will flow better. If I continue to do this daily, a year from now, I’ll have better mobility, better cardiovascular health, feel more confident in my body, and feel stronger.

Through all this decision-making, I have followed one golden rule: don’t let perfection get in the way of progress. There will be days and times when you cannot complete your to-do list, and that is OKAY. As long as you continue to listen to your body’s needs and make the best next decision for your body, you are on the way to living a healthy, desired life. The key is sustainable action, not perfect action. It’s more important to have consistency in our lives than to try and do it all. Small, sustainable choices create a foundation for long-term wellness.

Everything you want is possible with the proper motivation and a supportive belief system. For example, if you want to be active with your grandchildren, what are you doing today to support that goal? What does “being active” mean to you? Or, if you dream of traveling well into your later years, how are you preparing your body for that reality? What we do now affects our tomorrow, whether that is one year from now, five years from now, or twenty years from now.

When we shift our mindset from short-term fixes to long-term well-being, we empower ourselves to make choices that truly serve us. The decision to take action today isn’t just about feeling good in the moment—it’s about creating a future where you can fully enjoy life on your terms.
